What do you need to know about your workplace’s MSDS?

Whether you work in an office or a factory, chances are likely that your place of employment has an MSDS. Officially known as the Material Safety Data Sheet, this document provides vital information on the different types of hazardous chemicals that are used in Iowa workplaces.

Exposure to toxic chemicals can be more prevalent than you might think. You do not have to work in a laboratory or doctor’s office to be exposed to any number of dangerous substances. Potentially harmful chemicals can be found at nearly any workplace. According to FindLaw, your employer is required to provide MSDSs on the chemicals that are stored and used at your workplace. The following examples show the types of chemicals commonly present in ordinary jobs:

  • Industrial-strength cleaners at restaurants or janitorial companies
  • Chemicals for science experiments in high school classrooms
  • Specialized chemicals used in auto body shops, factories or pharmacies

The MSDS at your workplace can protect you in numerous ways. If you are concerned about the chemicals you see in the cleaning cabinet at work, you can peruse the MSDS for information. This can be especially helpful if you have a skin allergy to certain substances or you come into frequent contact with these chemicals. MSDSs explain the dangers of the chemicals used in your workplace, as well as how to safely store and use them and how to administer emergency treatment if you suffer a hazardous exposure.

Your workplace’s MSDS can help you prevent an accidental exposure from causing a serious injury. The content in this post is meant for informational purposes and should not replace the advice of a lawyer.
