What is sick building syndrome?

If you work in a sick building in Iowa, you may easily develop health problems. A previous blog discussed the factors that make a building sick. This week's blog discusses the symptoms of sick building syndrome and what you can do to prevent it.

If you have sick building syndrome, you might experience a wide variety of symptoms. According to Healthline, you may feel nauseated, dizzy or fatigued. Sometimes your nose might run or feel like it is burning. Additionally, your chest may feel tight or you might have a rash on your skin that itches. Sometimes you may think you are coming down with a cold. If your symptoms usually get better after you leave work, however, it is likely you may have sick building syndrome.

If you realize the building you work in is making you sick, you may sometimes be able to keep these symptoms from getting worse. Opening a window or eating lunch outside may help, and it is a good idea to avoid indoor chemicals around your workplace. Additionally, it is a good idea to speak to your employer. Sometimes changing the humidity level of the building and changing the air filters regularly can keep contaminants away from you and your co-workers. Testing the building for mold might also help.

Most of the time, the symptoms of sick building syndrome do not linger if you take action. If your employer removes the hazards that are making you sick, you should typically begin to feel better. You may also improve when you minimize the amount of time you spend around certain hazards.
