4 tips for avoiding serious injuries on the job

Workers' compensation provides a financial safety net if you get hurt on the job. Workers' compensation covers lost wages, rehabilitation, vocational training and medical care. If a worker dies due to work-related injuries, survivors can receive death benefits.

No one wants to have to pursue compensation through workers' compensation, just like no one really wants to get hurt on the job. That's why it's so important for employers to take the time to make your job as safe as possible. Here are four tips that can help keep you safer on the job.

1. Wear the right personal protective equipment (PPE)

It is easy to believe that you can go without protective goggles or special shoes when you work in the same place every day, but remember that PPE is there to keep you safe. The right PPE prevents you from suffering injuries due to hazardous conditions that may be present in your workplace. If your PPE doesn't fit or is not up to standard, tell your employer and see about getting new equipment.

2. Keep emergency exits clear

Nothing would be worse than fleeing an explosion or fire only to find that you can't get to the exit. Make sure the emergency exits are always clear and easy to get to.

3. Report unsafe conditions immediately

Some unsafe conditions are a normal part of the job, but others, like bunched up carpets, unguarded machinery or exposed electrical parts aren't. Let your employer know if you see hazards that should not be there, so they can take steps to eliminate them.

4. Prevent falls

If you're working from a height, make sure you have the right PPE and gear to prevent you from falling. If there is a slick floor or damage, mark it so that people know there is a danger present. Taking these steps will help prevent injuries and workplace accidents.

It's possible to prevent many accidents on the job. Don't be afraid to speak up and inform your employer about any dangers you see. Letting your employer know about safety violations or hazards is the best way to make sure they are taken care of and no longer pose a threat to you or those you work with.

If you are injured on the job, it is wise to work with a knowledgeable workers' compensation lawyer who can maximize the amount you recover in benefits.
